OTTAWA, August 29, 2013 - Senator Victor Oh was among several parliamentarians attending a celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day. The reception was hosted on Aug. 19 by Indonesian Ambassador Dienne Hardianti Moehario at her official residence. A splendid display of Indonesian cuisine and culture was presented to the delight of dignitaries and guests.
“Canada’s links with Indonesia have never been stronger,” said Senator Oh, during his remarks on behalf of Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird. “Indonesia has emerged as Canada’s largest export market in ASEAN region and an important destination for Canadian Direct Investment Abroad.”
Canada and Indonesia have established diplomatic relations for 61 years. Bilateral relations between the two countries remain strong while economic and trade cooperation have grown significantly, particularly in areas of financial services, infrastructure, oil and gas sector, mining, aerospace and defence, information and communication technology, and agri-food products.
On Aug. 23, Minister Baird also met with his Indonesian counterpart, Dr. R. M. Marty M. Natalegawa, at the Ministerial Meeting of the 3rd Bilateral Consultative Forum. Discussions focused on cooperation between Canada and Indonesia in promoting trade, security and human rights.
