OTTAWA, June 12, 2014 – Senator Victor Oh, Co-Chair of the Canada-China Legislative Association (CCLA), thanked the delegates today from the National People’s Congress (NPC) of the People’s Republic of China who travelled to Canada to attend the 18th bilateral meeting of the CCLA. The delegation, consisting of high-ranking Chinese officials and business representatives, visited Vancouver and Ottawa during their four-day trip to learn about Canada’s expertise in finance and clean energy.
While in Ottawa, the delegates were joined by Ms. Wai Young, Co-Chair of CCLA and M.P. for Vancouver South, the Chinese Ambassador to Canada, H.E. Luo Zhaohui, Senator Joseph Day, and six members of the House of Commons. The delegation included General Chi Wanchun, Vice-Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the 12th NPC, Mr. Li Lihui, former President of Bank of China (2004-2014), and Mr. Sun Qin, Chairman of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).
Officials discussed a number of issues, ranging from Canadian clean energy technology to the possibility of establishing an offshore renminbi (RMB) exchange centre in Canada.
“I am very pleased with the success of this 18th bilateral meeting with our Chinese counterparts,” said Senator Oh. “We were able to engage in an open dialogue on what both countries required from one another to reach mutual economic cooperation and understanding. These meetings help to strengthen Canada’s deepening relationship and people-to-people ties with China.”
Senator Oh will be traveling to China in September as part of the Canada-China Legislative Association Co-Chairs’ Annual Visit to China.
